Road Trip Ride 2; Moab

Tuesday’s ride in Moab was spent on two different trail networks.  The first was the Amesa Back Mountain Bike Trail.  We’d start on the Cliff Hanger 4×4 Route, then turn left at the fork which would take us to the most amazing look-out point, where I dangled lets a couple thousand feet above the ground.  From there, we retraced our tracks before turning left on the Pothole Arch Trail, eventually arriving at the aptly-named Pothole Arch.  Turning back, and down, we took the left split onto Rockstacker then Jackson’s Trail.

Though not a particularly demanding 2hrs and 25mins, it was beautiful, fast, fun riding.  All that red slick-rock is so much fun, though certainly bumpy; you could have a LOT of fun with a full-suspension bike out here.  Much of the rock’s texture reminded me of Jaba the Hut’s oozing great mass.

At the end of the ride, we discussed exploring a second set of trails, ones that we’d actually planned on riding the next day.  But Reilly was hunger, he wanted to chew a bit more trail.  And really, who was I to argue?  So, we happily paid our $5[actually $2/per rider] and began what we thought would be another 1.5-2 hour ride within the privately-owned trails within Pritchett Canyon and Hunter Canyon.  Well, sometimes, things just aren’t what they appear.

Riding up Pritchett Canyon, we climbed in sand and over slick-rocked and around monstrous great boulders.  We climbed and climbed, while the sun went down and down.  After about an hour’s riding, we debated turning around, not knowing just how tough the rest of the trail would be[it’s a loop, so either we turned back or did the entire thing] or if we’d run out of light; a very dangerous situation to find one’self.  We opted to keep going.  The final double-diamond climb out of the Canyon and up Yellow Hill was brutal hike-a-bike.  However, making a right turn to start heading south-west, we flew along the sandy and hard-pack tail until our next right turn, heading down the Hunter Canyon Trail.  It was like nothing else.  Parts of the trail opened up wide and fast while other sections were so incredibly technical with the cost of error being death.

Finally, after 3.5 hours and just another 18 or so kilometres on this second set of trails, we hit the dirt-road that would take us back to the van; although, not before a 20 minute climb and very fast descent.  Our little 2-3 hour ride turned out to be a 6.5 hour epic ride along some of the most demanding yet enjoyable trails I’ve come across.

Hungry and tired, we ate and camped where we’d parked the van, both asleep by 8pm.  Moab, you don’t disappoint.
