It being after the sun had set when we arrived Monday evening, I had no idea of my surroundings along Kane Creek Road just outside of Moab. Those vague, distant black blobs would have to wait till morn to reveal their magnificence; they did not disappoint.

After coffee and breakfast, we drove the 4-5miles to the Amesa Back Trail-head and began to prepare for our ride. That’s when we noticed three people and a dog waaay up on a cliff-face, several hundred feet above. Reilly, noticing a wind-sock at ground level, quickly determined that they were base-jumpers. And he was right.

A few moments later and one at a time, two women and a man threw themselves off that huge cliff and after a second or two, pulled their parachutes. As the ‘chutes opened, a huge, thunderous, CLAP rung off the walls of the canyon and each jumper slowly floated to the ground. It was remarkable, a spectacle I never thought I’d ever see.

After a minute whining for its owner, the dog made its way back along the trail to reappear five minutes later happily greeting its owner. She casually packed away her gear, waved hello and drove off. Now that’s how you start your day with a bang!!
