Birthday Bicycle Ride
We’ve all got them, whether we like ’em or not. They are an inevitable, unavoidable part of life. In fact they are annual reminders of life; certainly of birth. How much significance we place in them, however, depends entirely on one’s take on life. Yup, birthdays. Recently, I celebrated my 40th.
For many folks, birthdays offer a chance to do something out of the ordinary, to do something special, to let loose and party. Living my life to the fullest every day, endeavouring to see and celebrate life at every turn, I too opted to do something special; to do what I love most, what makes me smile the broadest. Yup, I went for a bike ride with my friends in the desert.
By about 9:30am, eight of us set out on our bikes for the 37mile ride from Desert Sports, along Reed’s plateau, through the Lajitas trails and into the Big Bend Ranch State Park. Our destination was campsite Pila Montoya 3 where all our gear would be waiting our arrival. Heather was kind enough to drive the truck 3.5 hours to camp along with three other friends and their bicycles. Piled high in the truck were tents, coolers, food, cake and even a special birthday surprise.
The ride itself was glorious as we zoomed across the warm, sunny desert, charging forward like a locomotive over the smooth sandy single-track. With a short break at the Barton Warnock Center, we continued along the Contrabondo trails, the Old Government Road trail and up Fresno Canyon to camp. We all felt strong, rode well and found ourselves laughing often as the miles just flew by.
Arriving at camp mid-afternoon, we spent the rest of the day eating, drinking, laughing and playing. More friends arrived in time for dinner and camping under the clear desert sky. At one point, my dear friend Crystal pulled me aside. “I have something special for you” she whispered. She took me to the truck, opened the door and handed me my birthday crown. It was spectacular, more regal than the finest crown jewels. It had shooting stars and blue glitter; it even glowed in the dark! I wore it around camp the rest of the evening with the greatest of pride.
The next day, our group of eight riders swelled to eleven for the long, fast downhill ride out of the park, retracing our steps from the day before.
While it may have been my birthday celebration ride, there was a moment when I saw into the future. For several miles, Reilly led the train with eleven year old Caelan following easily behind, myself in third position. Caelan rode with confidence and ease. Typically, Reilly and I are the fastest locals here in the Big Bend…but that won’t last long. I give Caelan five years before he’s the one leading the charge.
With the return leg completed, dinner was again provided by the most wonderful Cindy…complete with a second birthday cake!
Birthdays really are a celebration of life and I feel they should be honoured in the same manner. To that end, I celebrated mine the way I celebrate life nearly every day. I rode my bike, I laughed and loved with friends, I was outside enjoying all the beauty the world has to offer. And if I can continue to spend every day like it’s my birthday and spend every birthday like it’s any other day, I will remain forever young and happy.
Birthday celebrations of this size and sort take lots of work and the selfless efforts of many fine people. To that end, I must extend a special thanks to Cindy, Heather, Crystal and Desert Sports for making it all happen. You are such wonderful people and I love you all dearly. Thank you.
