Bike Fest = Big Family

It’s over.  Another successful Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest has passed us by and, from all reports, it was a huge success.  But just how do we measure success?  I’ve been thinking a bit about that recently and have come up with a few qualifiers.

With over 460 registered riders compared to just under 400 last year, growth sure does point to success.  While many of those are from all over the great State of Texas, so many others are willing to travel huge distances to participate in an event that offers no prizes, no glory, no bragging rights to friends back home.  We had folks from Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico and I’m certain other States were well represented.  Certainly if folks are willing to travel many, many hours to come rides their bikes, it must have been a successful event.

One of the principle organizers–and benefactors–of the Bike Fest is the Big Bend Trails Alliance, a group of folks dedicated to building trails and relationships throughout the Big Bend area.  The Bike Fest serves as a fundraiser for the BBTA.  With registration dollars, raffle ticket sales, retails sales and additional donations, I’m certain the coffers have been replenished.  Surely this means success.

I once heard someone say that to get a first date with a potential love interest is easy; it’s getting a second date that’s the hard part.  At this year’s Bike Fest so many folks were return visitors, having enjoyed such an incredible event the year(s) before.  This I discovered first-hand as I continually found myself reuniting with friends I’d made in previous years.  Sheila, Rolf, Tammy, AJ, Jason, the Team Super Awesome posse, my American doppelganger, Keith…and so many more.

While I don’t have any numbers to back it up, I bet 75% of those who came out this year had done so last year.  And of the other 25%, many are friends of those who have been here before. Personally, the bike fest has become an annual family reunion.  We all just love to ride, enjoy the company of other like-minded cyclists and revel in the laid-back atmosphere.  While there are many racers who show up, it’s the absence of the pressure and stress of a race environment that makes this event such a draw.

With all those riders, with all those donations and with such a strong family of cyclists in attendance for the 2014 Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest, I am confident in saying that it was the best yet.  Although, I’m already thinking to next year…..
