Whiplash at Whitefish

On January 1st, 2011, dbt and I loaded the rental car and took off for two days of snowboarding in Whitefish, Montana. The drive, which took us through northern Idaho, was a fairly uneventful 4.5hrs. including a break for gas(coffee for cars) and coffee(gas for people). Finding our hotel, we soon bunked down, eager for the day of snowboarding that lay ahead.

Since it had been exactly eleven years since I last strapped boots to board–Jan 1st, 2000 in Banff, Alberta–

Riding the chair-lift, dbt turned to me and asked “So, how’s the confidence level right now?” “Pretty low, I have to admit.” Thankfully, snowboarding is like riding a bike; I was soon carving big fat lines down the freshly groomed hills with full confidence. And, just like riding a bike, once in a while I crash. Let me tell you, is my neck ever sore today from smacking the back of my head against the ground a couple of times; but that’s what helmets are for.

While there was plenty of snow and not too many people, the weather was cloudy, foggy and at times snowing so the view was not as spectacular from the summit as I’d been told. But we didn’t come here for the view, we came to shred! It felt wonderful to play in the snow, feel the board under my feet and the wind rushing past my ears. One thing is for sure; eleven years was far too long to wait between rides!

And while the riding was excellent, it was the people in Montana that made this such a great trip. They have to be some of the friendliest folks I’ve ever met. The guys and gals where I rented my gear; all the folks working on the mountain; the people I met on the lifts and everyone we met in town; all were welcoming and genuinely happy to see us. Without hesitation, I highly recommend that anyone on the west coast who is looking to hit the slopes make the trip to Whitefish; it’ll be well worth it. Oh yeah, and after dinner at The Tupelo Grille, visit the Pin and Cue and order a beer-tower. Beer-tower, really.
