The Love Affair is Over

My girl has gone away. There will be others, but none like her. The love affair is over.

In September 2011, I assembled my brand new Moots MootoX YBB. A custom spec’d 19″ titanium 29’er softail cross-country mountain bike. After racing the 60km Paul’s Dirty Enduro, I boxed her up and flew to Colorado where we spent two weeks getting to know each-other. Spending much time in and around the San Isabel National Forest that trip, I named her Isabelle.

Since then, we have ridden thousands of miles over tens of thousands of hours together.

In 2013 we completed the Leadville Trail 100. In 2013 and ’14, we completed the toughest one-day mountain-bike race in north america, the Vapor Trail 125. There was my eventual triumph over the 100km Paul’s and so many passes around the Epic Loop in the Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas. I’ve bike-packed all over Colorado and even a month in the Peruvian Andes. Last summer we explored the trails of Squamish, BC, greatly upping my technical game. I know this bike inside and out, we are one.

In 2014, she developed a crack on the down-tube. Moots promptly repaired her and sent Isabelle back to me for many more happy miles together.

About three weeks ago, just days before the Telluride 100, I found another crack. I stripped her down, boxed her up and sent her back to Moots for assessment. She cannot be repaired. She must be replaced. My heart broke.

The crack the ended it all

It will take about eight weeks for Moots to craft a replacement frame. However, a lot has changed in cycling technology and philosophy over the past seven years. The frame I’ve selected is a Mountaineer YBB and will require a host of new parts, since very little of what was on Isabelle is compatible.

While I am looking forward to that new frame, to all the miles and memories we’ll share together, currently I am still smarting from the loss of my girl.

Isabelle has gone away, never to return. The love affair is over.
