The Journey

Many years ago, after a very cold, bitter and utterly disappointing Uxbridge Icebreaker mountain-bike race,(I suffered through one of two laps then quit) I was feeling low and cursing the race, cursing myself, cursing cycling. My friend and then riding partner, Gurdie, suggested I take a good look at my motivations for riding. “You gotta figure out why you do this, Bowling”

If you’ve read any of my recent ramblings, you’ll have noticed the dissatisfaction I’ve been feeling around my cycling. The simple joy of riding of has been missing far too often. You will also have noticed that the tide is changing, that I’m tending to ride for the right reasons. Mostly, just good ole fashioned riding my bike because it makes me happy.

Mountain-bike rides under the sun and road rides in the rain. Gravel roads and rail trails. I’ve ridden with old friends and new acquaintances, by myself and with my family. I opted not to enter one event but have just been asked to race at another.

Can I say exactly why I ride? I’m not so sure about that. There are as many reasons as there are miles. What I do know is, as my journey meanders through all of life, I’ll cover the distance on my bike, one pedal stroke at a time.
