When Isabelle came into my life last year I had a set of wheels built for this new mountain-bike. Having heard good things about their rim’s, I decided to try the Stan’s ZTR Flow 29’er rims. The front was laced to a black Project 321 Lefty hub. There rear was built on a red anodized Chris King ISO disc hub with the stainless steel driveshell. Both were 32h built 3-cross with double-butted DT spokes and brass nipples. Cassette is a 9speed SRAM 990 with the red anodized spider. Front wheel is bolt-on; the rear had a red anodized titanium Cooks Bros. quick-release lever. Pretty sweet wheels for sure.
During my winter in Texas a spoke broke on the rear wheel and I had issues maintaining over-all spoke tension. The front was a bit more flexy than I was happy with, regularly rubbing against the upper inside of the Lefty. I had ongoing trouble keeping proper spoke tension on that wheel. I rode 5kms with a flat tire at the Paris to Ancaster race and I’ve had trouble with rim tapes migrating. Yup, I decided it was time to have the rear wheel rebuilt.
When taking the wheel apart this week I found small cracks in the rim at several of the spoke-holes. I know what you’re wondering and the answer is no; those rims don’t have eyelets. I know I know, what was I thinking; no eyelets?
That Chris King hub with the stainless steel driveshell now has a 12mm thru axle with a DT Swiss RWS thru bolt instead of a q/r. The rim is the new Mavic TN719 29’er rim. It’s 32h, black, eyeletted and laced 3-cross with silver double-butted DT Swiss spokes. Same SRAM 990 cassette but a new Avid HSX two-piece 160mm rotor. All bad-ass.
