Last week was Taf’s birthday and I was fortunate enough to join her, Reilly and Kimberly for her birthday ride. Before I go any further, let me just say that Taf is one of the most bad-ass people I know, not to mention a killer mountain-biker.
We drove to the abandoned mining/railway town of St. Elmo. We climbed dirt roads as overweight bubba’s and their flabby children rode by on their ATVs. Eventually we arrived at the Alpine Tunnel. Apparently, there was a competition to see who could get to the other side of the mountain first; those going over the mountain or those going through it. The former won, but both were operational for many years. The Alpine Tunnel was lined with old-growth Redwood timbers imported from California. Today, the Tunnel has been closed and is filled with boulders.
Just before the Tunnel we turned left onto the Divide Trail. It was tough going, plenty of it forcing us to dismount and hike-a-bike. Once at the summit, we sat amongst the wild-flowers, in awe of the beauty and serenity around us. Back on the bikes, we eventually came to a section of single-track within the trees. It was fast, smooth and full of tight switchbacks. We couldn’t help but yell with glee, surely freaking-out the wonderful people who were working on those very trails.
Though a short ride compared to so many others I’ve enjoyed out here with these three amazing friends, it was such a treat to share the day with Taf on her birthday ride. Happy birthday Taf!
