Slug Life

It is interesting to consider the lessons, stories or memories that stay with us, the ones we carry through life when other events simply drift into the ether. One of the strangest legacies to remain with me from my cycle-touring adventure along the US west coast in 2010/11(what started this blog) are slugs.

During that time an old friend had his grade 5 class follow my route via this blog. They were encouraged to ask me questions as they learned about west coast geography. One of the students, Angela, was particularly interested in a photo I posted of a leopard slug spotted on an Oregon road.

Limax maximus, Oregon.

Her keen interest in my posts, well written sentences and intelligent questions motivated me to email her a few other slug pictures as I made my way south. I hoped to encourage her interest in animals, biology and science.

Eventually my tour ended, as did the school year and any contact with Mr Cyr’s class and Angela. That was ten years ago.

Until a month ago, Mr Cyr(now a school principal) and I had lost contact. When he resurfaced on Facebook and reached out to me, I told him about Angela and the slugs.

“Funny to consider the events that touch our soul, that we take with us through life. Slugs.” he replied.

We all have those strange memories that we carry around with us; some peculiar anecdote from years past that comes to mind whenever the right trigger reveals itself.
