It’s Not Training, It’s Focused Riding

One month; four weeks; twenty-seven days.  Yup, that’s all the time I’ve got till the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest kicks off down here in sunny West Texas.  After having spent so little time on the bike the past month or so, I’ve got some real training to do if I’m going to lead some of the rides that weekend.

Damn, did I just use the “T” word?  Gosh that sounds awful.  Rather than training, let’s just say I’ve got some focused riding to do in preparation for the Bike Fest.  Most notably, I’m charged with leading the 60mile Epic Loop.  I’ll know some of the folks who will be there for that ride; I can’t let them down, nor will my pride let me perform poorly.  But never mind then; for now I’ve just gotta get back on the bike…

On Sunday I rode with several friends in the State Park and enjoyed it immensely.  Tuesday I went exploring with Ali on the dirt roads beyond Sawmill Mountain which was very rewarding, although a little cool and overcast.  Wednesday, after finishing reading Domestique; The True Life Ups and Downs of a Tour Pro by Charly Wegelius, I was inspired to go for a road ride, despite–and because– it being only 41deg/f, windy, overcast and damp.  On that ride, only Manu joined me; the National Park Rangers all bailed. Seems they’re soft.

All of a sudden Thursday I found myself on a spirited three hour mtb with Mike, Mark, Kevin. There were times when the pace got a little hot, particularly from Mark late in the day. Today I’m on-call with the local Fire and EMS so I can’t go ride.  On Sunday I’ll be helping out during the Big Bend Ultra 50 mile running race.  There, I and fellow mountain-biker(and softie Ranger) Mike Ryan will be serving as medics on bikes, patrolling sections of the race course that are inaccessible to motor-vehicles.  Should be fun, but hopefully not exciting.

A decent start to my “focused riding” but I certainly do need to amp it up and get in some long rides…..
