Motel livin’ never felt so good

Day two riding along the Columbia River Gorge. Although slightly better scenery than yesterday, it was again, cold, wet and windy. Oh yeah, and the climbing never seems to abate. One thing I have noticed along this stretch is the mirror image on the Oregon side of the River; rail-road tracks, hydro-poles, roadway, rocky cliffs and presumably, all the road-kill.

[Along the Ontario roads, I noticed beer bottles, water bottles and cigarette butts. Here, the top three items cast aside are beer cans, beer bottles and light-beer cans & bottles. Seriously; I bet you could make a descent living collecting all those damn cans/bottles and returning them for the deposit. ]

Having not had a shower since Tuesday morning in Spokane and with a bag full of damp clothing–including today’s–I decided that I’d get myself a motel room for the night. Approaching Maryhill, just past the Stonehenge Veterans Memorial, I spied deep in the Gorge, a variety of buildings and cross-roads. Yup, I was pretty sure I’d find a real classy motel down there. After blasting down the hill to the River, I crossed the all-too-narrow bridge and pulled in to Dinty’s Motel.

While checking in–only $45 for the night!–I inquired as to the possibility of finding somewhere to do a load of laundry. Alas, nowhere in town I was told. Even after I warned her it was all wet cycling clothing, she was still willing to do my wash.

So while my gear was being washed, I had a nice long hot shower. Damn that felt good!! From there, across the street to Linda’s Restaurant for dinner. Hmmm, what to have, what to have. How about…..a grilled cheese sandwich. Instead of fries, I got the potato salad–mneh, just okay–plus the dinner salad, which was just lettuce and two little pieces of red cabbage. There may have been a strand of carrot in there, but I can’t be sure. Oh well, I was full.

Returning to my room, I found my laundry done. How sweet is that?! The next few hours were spent watching baseball–all that jingoist flag-waving support-our-troops B.S. sure can ruin an otherwise entertaining sporting event–eating potato chips and drying out the rest of my gear. Around 11pm, I crawled into bed for a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow, I would soon learn, would be an amazing day of riding.

Oh yeah, in case you were wondering; I sure did leave a very good tip for my laundry.
