Las Cruces Posse Goes Swimming

Having friends come for a visit is always such a treat.  Whether it be for a holiday, a celebration or just to say hello.  When they come for a weekend of mountain-biking, it’s that much more special.  Two weeks ago, my Las Cruces mountain-bike posse descended upon the Big Bend for two days of riding under the desert’s hot sun.

Arriving Friday night, Saturday morning Ciara, Jeff, Ligia, Lori and I set out to ride the Rincon Loop in the Big Bend Ranch State Park.  Being the monster that he is, Jeff was keen to add the Dome Loop at both the beginning and the end of the ride.  When we arrived at the split, we decided that we’d just add the Dome Loop to the end of the ride.  It was starting to get pretty damn warm and we didn’t want to run out of water or run out of steam.

We all rode hard and well, swooning over all the blooming rainbow cacti and their yellow, pink and fuchsia petals.

Since I’d been out here for a few months, I was fairly accustomed to the heat and the total exposure out here in the Chihuahuan Desert; there is no respite from the sun’s rays.  My bad-ass posse, however, may have been feeling it a bit more than I.  On the return trip, we reached the Whit Roy mine–7miles from the trailhead–and stopped to have a chat.  We were all running low on water and the heat was taking it’s toll on us all.  The decision was made to forgo the Dome Loop and just complete the Rincon.  A smart choice for sure.

As we loaded the bikes into the truck, Jeff had a stroke of brilliance; we should go for a swim!  But not in the hot springs, but in the swimming pool at the RV park just down the road.  Within 15minutes we were all splashing about like little kids.  It was wonderful, just what we needed!
