Just Another Day in the Desert

Ahhh, my life in the desert.  Days filled with mountain-bike rides and road miles; evenings  spent enjoying jazz bands and burlesque shows. Even a week-long first aid course keeps me busy.  The ongoing work to my van/home continues while more time is spent further developing the local trails that criss-cross my land. Lazy days and easy evenings spent with friends old and new, watching the mountains move as the heavens parade their majesty.  Life moves at a slow pace down here in the midst of all this beauty, though time does also seem to fly by.

This past weekend, myself and about fifteen others descended upon the Big Bend Ranch State Park for a two-day trail-building weekend.  The Fresno Divide Trail was scouted back in February or March by park Superintendent Barrett, Reilly, Rick, Mike and I.  With crucial input from Park Archeologist Tim and the tremendous enthusiasm of the new Trails Manager, Amber, we had a four mile line of little blue flags to follow as we cut, trimmed, scraped, dug, picked and hauled rocks.  Camping in the park for the weekend, our hard work was rewarded with big meals, a warming fire and many laughs shared between friends.  By mid-day Sunday, the trail was complete and our bikes were ready for the inaugural ride.  It was fantastic!

Riding east to west, the trail was smooth, fast and flowing, though it began with a tough, steep climb that really got our heart-rate going!  One section was over rock with a texture like sand-paper, though not quite the slick-rock of Utah.  Other sections dove and rose out of various drainages while others followed the remnants of generations old ranch and mining roads.  The one bench-cut section of trail was built by myself and four others; a section we’re rightly proud of, equalling the caliber of work done the length of that trail.

This and more work is to be completed over the next month or so as the Desert Sports posse begins to prepare for the Chihuahua Desert Bike Fest, held over three days mid-February.  Then, hundreds will descend upon this sleepy little part of the world to enjoy some of the most remarkable riding I’ve even known.

Both before and after there will be birthdays parties, river trips, bike-packing expeditions, pot-luck dinners and all sorts of other social occasions.  Thankfully, the sky easily passes through all colours of the spectrum as the mountains continue their slow parade.
