Thinking about a ride: Golden to Kremmling to Dillon to Golden via Rollins Pass

The weekend of Sept 27-28 I have obligations in Denver, CO…the city.  Monday the 29th, I have an appointment with the good folks at LinDen Engineering to have the head replaced on my Sprinter.  Since my little home will be rather incapacitated for a couple of days, I figured it would be an excellent opportunity for an exploratory bike-packing trip.  Figure I’ll do a big ole’ 212 mile loop with about 20,000′ of climbing.  Here’s what I’m thinking:

The route will take me north out of Golden on asphalt to Rollinsville(Henry Rollins, super bad-ass and spoken word genius) then west along a rail-trail 18 miles or so to Winter Park.  From there, north along route 40, through Fraser and before reaching the left turn for route 55.  That dirt road will take me to Hot Sulphur Springs and route 40 which will take me to my furthest destination point, Kremmling, CO.

From there, south on the pavement along route 9 before turning onto route 33, which looks like a pretty remote dirt road going past a couple of reservoirs before turning south-west and reuniting with route 9.  South on to Dillon, then route 60 and the frontage roads that follow interstate I-70 to Idaho Springs.  Not sure about the road conditions, but north from Idaho Springs on 281/279 to Central City.  Eastbound will get me to route 119 where I’ll look for the left turn onto route 9, then 46.  That should put me back onto route 70 and the ride back into Golden.

Google Maps tells me this is 230mile ride with about 23,000′ of climbing.  However, I’m really not sure how good or bad those roads are, nor just how crazy the climbs will be.  Looks as though there are plenty of places to re-provision along the way and with stealthy minimal bike-packing gear, I’m sure to find adequate places to camp.

So ya, that’s the idea.  If you have any suggestions, I will gladly accept them.  Just the idea of exploring new routes, new trails, new views and towns has me looking forward to this little adventure.  Just ain’t nothing like the open road with a bike and a tent.
