Mid-Summer Desert Sojourn

Despite living it up in the Colorado Rockies, deep down, I knew I missed Big Bend and my desert family. Suddenly finding myself with five days free of commitments, I made my way to Texas, anxious to experience the full force of a Chihuahuan Desert summer.

Leaving Salida Tuesday afternoon, I arrived in Terlingua 24hrs later, staying until Saturday afternoon. For the next four days I immersed myself in the glory that is my desert paradise. Strangely, the temperatures were unseasonably low, between 80-100F/27-38C. This permitted a couple of bike rides and lots of socializing with those who remain in the desert all summer.

Barging in on my favourite hermit, Dick Pointe, I forced him to drink beer and discuss issues of great irreverence and meagre importance. Such is the life of a hermit.

From there, I pulled in at Desert Sports, shocking Mike, Crystal and Annie; I had told but one person I was coming to town. There were Lone Stars, many Lone Stars.

Waking on my land the next morning, I felt that all was right with the world. Even if the sun rose MUCH further north than I’d ever seen it before.

Thursday I went for a two hour solo ride. Peace, calm and single-track. Don Carr!! That evening, adult beverages on The Porch with the one and only, Guru. This time the conversation focused on issues of great importance. Well, at least to me and my little world. Actions and commitments I have been considering for some time were encouraged greatly by my EMS mentor. The big thoughts. Yes, I’m being vague, just accept that for the moment.

Happy boy.

Friday I commandeered the weekly Desert Sports mountain bike ride and was joined by several dear friends for the Outer Loop. Yuhas and I, of course, added a few more miles and a beer at his place.

Yes, that is Mike Long on social media, and wearing closed-toe shoes. Though, not to be outdone by the one-and-only, Sierra.

Pinche viejo!!!!

That evening was spent at the Birthday House, chillin’ with Timmy, Amber, Geezer, two strange dogs and a pack of javelinas. You should have seen Timmy leap on that table! Though I was loathe to leave Saturday, the idea of driving for 16-17hrs in one push was not very appetizing. At 3pm, my soul warmed by the desert sun and the love of dear friends, I started for Colorado.

Mountains, butterflies, flowers and private single-track. Welcome to the Birthday House.

The initial reasons for this road trip were two-fold; I miss the desert and I wanted to experience 120F/50C. I left having seen another side of the place I call home. The sun was different, the sky was familiar yet all new. The Chisos looked like I’d never seen them before. The sounds were the same but new. The Porch was virtually free of tourists, just me and my friends. Bliss.

I also left knowing I need to consider my future, where and how I spend it. Deep down I’ve known this for a while, but have been avoiding the conversation. While the mountains do bring me peace(and baller F’ing mountain-biking), the desert is my home. It took me a long time to find this place…

While the sights, sounds and smells were immensely comforting, I felt like the desert was challenging me; “So, what you gonna do, Bowling?” Hmm, sigh…ponder..

For now, I’m just going to keep turning my pedals one at a time.
