Cross Nationals

This past weekend saw Canada’s fastest and finest bicycle racers descend upon Peterborough, Ontario for the 2019 Canadian Cyclocross Nationals. While I don’t race cross, I’ve many friends who do. And while the big races were on Saturday, Sunday offered some stellar racing by some of Canada’s best.

The big boys charging away from the start line. Damn they were fast!

For those who don’t know, cyclocross is a style of road bike racing that has been hugely popular in Europe for decades. Racers complete a handful of short but VERY intense laps, often in a city park setting, negotiating mud, wooden barriers, unridable hills and quite often, miserable autumn weather. It’s 45-60mins of balls-to-the-wall, heart-exploding, threshold racing. With these races a huge fan favourite, cross has steadily been gaining popularity in North America over the past 20 years or so.

Perfect autumn racing conditions.

Personally, Sunday offered me the chance to cheer on many dear friends, reunite with some I’ve not seen for years, while meeting many new happy cyclists. It was a wonderful day in the park with the Peterborough Cycling Club, Shimano, Wild Rock and many others hosting an expertly run event.
