Couple of Canucks Climb Canyon Creek

When I first came to Colorado in the fall of 2011, the first really hard ride I was taken on was the Canyon Creek loop.  While just 20 miles in length, the climbing is punishing with lots of hike-a-bike sections.  Since I’d only been in CO a few days, the altitude really kicked my ass.  But with a 90 minute descent to reward all that effort, it was one of the most spectacular rides I’ve ever enjoyed.

About a week ago my dear friend Ali arrived in Colorado from Ontario for a month’s visit.  She’s been out on a few short’ish rides since her arrival and yesterday announced that she’s feeling strong and wanted a solid 4-5 hour ride.  Perfect, I thought, let’s do Canyon Creek!

The climb up Tomichi Creek trail is a tough one; lots of steep sections all littered with loose rocks.  But Ali’s a champ, she just kept on truckin’ up that hill till we reached the tree-line.  “Now the hard work begins” I said with a devilish grin.  Just below Tomichi Pass, we made the left turn onto the single-track.  Those next couple miles are tough, gruelling, slow and painful.  Nearly all of it is hike-a-bike; super steep rock scree fields and tight, nasty switch-backs.  We carried our bikes on our backs and shocked the heck out of those four motor-bikers.

At the summit, the view is stunning, mountains and clouds for 360degrees.  As I’d expected, Ali was blown away, in awe of the view and the feeling of being up so high, nearly 12,600′.  With goofy pictures taken and a bit of food eaten, it was time for the long descent down the other side.  It never disappoints and is, in fact, one of the most enjoyable trails I’ve ever ridden.  It starts out pretty rocky above the trees, but gets more and more soft and flowy as we entered the tree canopy.

After 5 hours we were back at the van, Ali all smiles, if not a bit red-cheeked from the exertion.  Yup, Canyon Creek really does demonstrate all the glory that this mountain paradise has to offer.  Welcome to Colorado Ali!
