Cottonwood; climbing and soaking

Monday early afternoon I arrived in Buena Vista on the Arkansas River in central Colorado. I made my way west a few miles, parking the Sprinter at the Cottonwood Hot Springs. Fighting the urge to soak right away, I put on my cycling kit and headed out for my first ride back in high country.

As soon as it started, the road went up and the head-winds started gusting. I didn’t care, bring it. At times I was barely inching along that smooth mountain road. At about 10,000′ I put on my vest; at 11,000′, arm and knee warmers. After more than 3,600′ of slow, windy climbing, I summited Cottonwood Pass, elevation 12,126′. Here on the Continental divide, above the tree-line, pavement takes you towards the Atlantic Ocean, a dirt road towards the Pacific Ocean. Magical. Damn how I’ve missed this place.

What took nearly 1:45 to climb, took just over twenty-two minutes to descend, topping out at 52.7mph/84.8kph. Within minutes of returning to the van I was soaking in the 105+deg hot springs. I soaked for a while, went back to the van for food and a nap, then returned for more immersion therapy. It was blissful. I went to bed early and slept soundly. Mountain life, I love it.
