Colorado; Till Next We Meet

Oh Salida, my sweet little mountain paradise, what a grand summer it has been.  Huge days on the bike, mellow evenings at the hot springs.  Within the  aspens and the pinons, over mighty passes and along endless single-track.  We’ve laughed and danced and floated and cried.  There have been triumphs and tragedies, lessons and losses, blessings and blood.  Within it all, life has shown me much about living.  But summer is coming to an end and my attention is looking south.

Thursday morning I head to Golden to collect my van.  Friday morning I have several final errands to take care of.  Once that To Do List is complete, I’ll hit the road.  Yes, great mountains, I am heading to the desert, I am heading to Terlingua.

One of the tasks I had to complete was getting properly fitted on my single-speed Kona Unit, Sally, a bike I’ve had with me all summer but never once rode.  That was, until today, my last ride of the season here in the Colorado Rockies.  After Shawn squared me away and I spent just a bit more money on my bikes, I rolled out of town, making the right turn onto County Road 101.

Slowly yet surely I plodded along, standing to grind out a few miles, walking one or two little sections; my body still not quite fully acclimated to churning out the miles on just one gear[for the geeks out there, I just swapped out the stock 18t cog for a 20t Salsa cog, powered by the stock 32t ring.]  Once on the Rainbow Trail, the grimaces turned to grins, the scowls to smiles.  Flowing single-track under a canopy of green, gold, red and rust.  The sky was blue, the clouds soft; the trails dry, the air fresh.   I pulled over in an open grassy patch on the side of Methodist Mountain.  There, I got off the bike, sat in the grass and just breathed, taking in the majesty that surrounded me.

Having only ridden it once before, I opted to turn right onto the Columbine Trail.  The trail magic continued, my smile broadened.  All too soon, the trail popped me out back on route #101.  As I coasted down the empty dirt road, I felt the arms of the mountains wrapped around me, giving me a big farewell hug.  Till the next time, Colorado….
