Challenges, Weirdness and Rain in the Desert

It’s been a weird week, both ups and downs.

Challenging conversations with friends. Nerves and even a little bit of acrimony surrounding an upcoming theatre performance. Back pain. Today, non-stop rain in the desert.

There was the hike to the summit of Monument Mountain with Timmy on Saturday which afforded us the most far-reaching views I think I’ve ever seen in the Big Bend.  On Sunday, I led a group mountain-bike ride where we dumped the bikes after an hour of riding, changed shoes, then set off for a two hour hike. A huge success.  Wednesday, a little hike up Fresno Creek with my dear friend Becca where we followed the bloody foot prints of a big cat. Finally, today, after feeling rather out of sorts, I went for a hike as the rain continued to pour. Muddy boots and vibrant desert smells.

I’ve learned much about myself from those conversations while continuing to gain a new appreciation for this land. All in all, a pretty good week. Don’t worry, I did also get in a couple of road rides while I was at it.
