Hello Hannah,
The California Academy of Sciences is a bit of both; there are many live animals as you see in the pictures, but there are also many fossils, bones and other exhibits that you might find in a museum.
Within the 3-story tall glass walls of the rain forest, the birds and butterflies flew all around. The other animals, like the snakes and other reptiles, were all behind glass. My favourite part was walking underneath the pool where all the big fish were swimming.
