Burger Night Road Ride

Monday evenings here in Big Bend is burger night with local restaurant-bar The Starlight Theatre serving up 2-for-1 burgers. This weekly special has also spawned the somewhat regularly attended Burger Night Ride.

Folks leave Desert Sports around 4-4:30, riding into Big Bend National Park on some of the best roads I’ve ever ridden. At about the same time, other folks–mostly NPS Rangers–leave the Panther Junction visitor center(PJ) in the National Park. We usually meet at about the mile 15 marker then head back to Terlingua for, well, burgers. All told, it works out to being about a thirty mile ride, usually done in about two hours.

Sunday afternoon I agreed with Michael Ryan that we’d be doing the Burger Night Ride that Monday. With only Mark Yuhas up for the ride from town, we two rolled out of Desert Sports around 2:30pm. We intended on riding the full thirty miles to PJ. It was a beautiful desert afternoon; sunny, warm and with just a bit of a tailwind as we headed east.

Arriving at Michael’s house in PJ around 4:20pm, we waited and waited for him to arrive. But he never did. His road bike was in the garage so we knew we hadn’t missed him. Finally, Mark and I decided to go to Mark’s office to see what was happening. And what was happening was Michael sitting behind a computer. After a bit of friendly harassment, we got Michael home and onto his bike. By the time we left PJ it was about 5:15. The temperature was starting to drop, as was the sun. We knew we’d have to work hard to get back to town before the sun was fully set.

Since Michael was late and would be riding out just fifteen miles before returning to PJ, Mark and I decided he ought to pull us up the first few climbs. The honourable–if not tardy–man he his, Michael nodded in agreement and took his place at the front of our little peleton.

Despite the headwind we crushed those miles. Leaving Michael at the mile fifteen marker, Mark and I continued on, working well together, flattening those rollers. In just 90mins, we’d knocked out those thirty miles, giving us sixty miles for the day.

Although I opted to pass on burgers(veggie or otherwise), it was another successful Burger Night Ride. So, if you’re around town on a Monday afternoon and looking to earn that beefy patty, come out for one of the best road rides in town. Just don’t count on Michael to be on time.
