Father’s Day

Last week was a bit of a mixed bag of rides.  The Wednesday night Need for Speed didn’t really gel.  One of the strong guys had mechanical problems which kept him from staying with the group on the climbs.  Leading the group up one of those hills, Jeff said to go hard, however, I went a bit too hard and dropped the group, rather than keeping them on my wheel and suffering.  Later, on a section we’d discussed doing long single pulls, we kept to the fast rotation.  Not that it was necessarily a bad thing, it was just not what we’d discussed.  Oh well, that’s life on the bike.  At least we didn’t have any broken derailleur hangers, flats or crashes this time.  http://connect.garmin.com/activity/190281524

On the previous week’s longer than normal Sunday ride, I was chatting with Terry about my Friday loop; going east on Brittania, north on Trafalgar, west on 15th, then south on 1st out of Moffat.  Living near that area, Terry was quick to lambaste me for riding up the very busy Trafalgar road; “you’re that guy I’ve seen?!”  He suggested a slightly different route, which I took Friday morning.  It was much more pleasant, with very little traffic and some a couple of interesting sites I’d never seen.  Thanks Terry. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/190281507

Sunday morning, Father’s day, the Club’s Long Ride left at 8am rather than 9am, which I certainly prefer.  Presumably because many of the regular riders had family obligations and because the forecast was for thunder-storms all day, the turn-out was fairly small.  Just nine riders instead of the typical 15-20.  No matter, we ride.

It was a very enjoyable ride for me personally as our route took us along roads that I only ever ride in the opposite direction.  It may not seem like a big deal, but I really enjoyed the change in direction and exploring these familiar roads anew.  There were also many, many folks out riding which was great to see.  By the end of the ride, it was Jeff and I alone, pushing home hard and against the wind for a total of 125kms.  After a meal and a shower, I was back to the Burlington Sound of Music Festival, where I was volunteering with St. John Ambulance.  Listening to some live music, meeting one of the bands and contributing a little bit to the community.  Yup, a pretty okay way to spend a Sunday.
