Shreddin’

In town for the weekend were a few folks from Austin, participating in the Big Bend Ultra Run. One of those racers, Brant, would set the course record for the 25km event on Sunday. Turns out Brant is a big-time road racer and a Texas State Time Trial Champion. Included in his posse was Chantal, an Expert level mtb racer familiar with the trails out here in the Big Bend area. Fortunately, Chantal and Brant had brought their mountain-bikes and were looking to ride. So, Monday morning, Brant, Chantal, Mark, Rick, Kt and I set out for Reed’s Plateau and the Lajitas “outer loop.”

We started out on the Miracle Mile, then over the blacktop and down the Cake-walk. It was there that Chantal took a bit of a tumble when, unknown to her, the trail suddenly drops off and into the creek-bed. Though the dust-cloud may have indicated a bad crash, she had nothing more than a few scratches on her knee that I cleaned up after the ride. Eventually, Kt turned off for a ride of her own while the rest of us continued on to complete the 45km loop.

Though initially we had no idea what our guests were looking for, it soon became apparent as Chantal kept on us to keep the pace high and take no breaks. So, not wanting to dissappoint, I took the lead and put the hammer down. The five of us–usually with Chantal right on my tail–ripped across the Lajitas singletrack, riding hard and fast.
