Feeling at Home, Miles from Anywhere

After a weekend spent on the trails, I spent the past week in the classroom taking the Wilderness Advanced First Aid course offered through Far Flung Outdoor Centre. It was an excellent course, I learned SO much and I really feel it has given me the tools to deal with most emergency medical situations I might come across while out on the trails, or even in the city for that matter. I also found that I really enjoyed the whole idea of working in emergency wilderness medicine. Not only was the course very informative, but I met many new people, got to spend time with friend Crystal and made a wonderful new friend. The timing for the 5 day course was perfect; I got a cold on the Tuesday. Better that I get a cold while taking a class than when I would rather be riding my bike.

Saturday afternoon Rick and I rode the 25km course of this year`s Stupid Race. It was a perfect welcome back after having been off the bike for a week.

Today was the Sunday Desert Sports ride. Starting from the East Contrabondo Trail-head, we made our way into the Big Bench Ranch State Park in two groups; one who would do the full 50km Rincon Loop and one who would do a variation of the Dome Trail. Joined by Mike, Rick, Kevin, Billy and Mike, we rode the those 50kms under clear skies and temperatures in the mid twenties Celsius. It was glorious to be back out on those trails, ones I`d not yet ridden since arriving here nearly six weeks ago.
It is these trails way out in the Park and the Solitario that I enjoy the most. The Rincon, La Posta, Sauceda, the Epic loop. It is out here I am most relaxed, most at peace. It is here in this sacred place that I feel at home. And that really is a special feeling indeed.
