And the Oscar goes to…

During my first visit to Terlingua and the Big Bend area, I went for a road ride just once. It was a glorious 100km birthday ride with fellow bike-geek extrordinaire, Rick. This year I opted not to also bring one of my road bikes, figuring that the expense for what would likely be just a handful of rides was really not worth it. On Tuesday, however, I was presented with an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.

Needing to produce some HD footage of folks canoeing on the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park for a promotional video, a local photographer approached Mike at Desert Sports for help. He in turn, asked Alison–a mutual friend of Kt and Rick’s and mine–and I to pose in a canoe on the river at Santa Elena canyon. As compensation for this gruelling day of modelling, Mike offered to also bring our bikes and drop us off at the top of Sotol Vista, a 5-6mile climb, so we could then ride home to Terlingua from there. Deal!!
Tuesday morning, Mike, Alison and I along with Rick and Kt[ugh, groupies] drove to Santa Elana canyon where we spent 15-20mins on the water, paddling about, pretending to be deep within the canyon and days into an epic river trip. Within an hour of arriving, we were being dropped off at the summit, ready for a screaming down-hill!!
Within moments of starting down the hill, I was in my biggest gear and nearly spun-out. So, rather than waste energy pedalling, I got low and tight and just cruised down that hill. With the slick tires I’d put on Isabelle the night before, we tore down that hill. In fact, I even came within 2kph of breaking my personal fastest-ever top speed, hitting 88.4kph. Not bad for coasting on a mountain-bike! The four of use cruised and smiled down that great decline, eventually settling down for the 30kms of undulating roads out of the Park and back to Terlingua.
In all, we rode 43kms in just 1hr 38mins, which included a 10min stop so I could re-seat my back tire. It was a beautiful day of riding, offering views of the Chisos, Mule Ears and even Terlingua that I’d not before seen. Thanks to Mike, hair & make-up, wardrobe, and all the little people that made my Oscar winning performance possible.
