Paul’s Dirty Enduro; 16 years of great trails and big smiles

For 15 years, Paul’s Dirty Enduro has proven itself more than just an epic mountain bike race. It is a warm-spirited gathering of cyclists, their friends and families. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the realities of mental illness and its sometimes tragic consequences; the event is held in honour of Paul Rush, a dear friend to those who spear-head this wonderful occasion. This year, the 16th running of Paul’s was held on Saturday, September 17th, 2011 and again, was a tremendous success. The organizers, volunteers, participants and outstanding trails make this mountain-bike enduro a truly grand affair.

Having completed the both the 60km and 100km races in past years, I did initially register for the very gruelling 100km event. A few days before the race, however, a wise friend suggested that it may be best to conserve a bit of energy for my upcoming trip to Colorado. Thus opting for the demanding 60km event, I was looking forward to a great day of riding in the Ganaraska Forest with a few hundred fellow cyclists.

The morning of the event, I was feeling a little lethargic, slow to get amped for the day ahead. I may simply have been a bit tired from all the excitement and 2 days of race-course trail marking. Taking advantage of the volunteer massage therapists on site, I soon found myself refreshed and ready to ride.

My goals for the day were twofold; ride the 60kms within 4-5hrs and finish within the first third of the 165 other racers. As soon as the race began I was off, feeling strong and finding my rhythm quickly. At each of the 3 feed zones, I stopped for only a few seconds; just long enough for a quick glass of Heed and half a peanut-butter and jam sandwich. Otherwise, I road hard and fast, attacking and passing people on the many tough climbs then recouping on the descents.

Riding well all day and attacking on every climb, I soon found myself never being passed, just catching other 60km and 100km riders[they start 3hrs earlier]. However, not knowing where I stood relative to other riders in my category, I simply maintained my pace all day. As it turned out, had I cranked it up just a little bit more those last 5-7kms, I could have achieved something I never had even considered; a podium finish.

Pumping my fist, hootin’ and hollerin’ as I finished, I was elated with my performance, knowing I’d done much better than originally planned. Crossing the line at 3hrs 29mins and 3seconds, not only did I far exceed my two original goals but I also finished fourth in my category, just 1min 31secs behind third place! When I learned that I could possibly have podiumed, my high spirits soared even further.

While the others racers rolled in, I showered, ate and was soon chatting with friends new and old. And that really is what mountain-biking is all about, particularly events like Paul’s Dirty Enduro; people coming together, riding some trails, enjoying each others company and reveling in the beauty of the outdoors. Can’t wait till next year! Hope you can join us!
