Last weekend I had done just that; my first foray back on the MTB since April 2011. After a couple of hours getting reacquainted with Stella, my Brodie hard-tail MTB, I was feeling right at home on those dirt trails, smiling the whole time. This weekend’s ride, however, was more a cause for pain than celebration.

Saturday afternoon Peter, Rick, two other experienced mountain-bikers and myself set-out around 1:30pm. After a solid 2.5hrs of trail riding, we decided to call it a day. Making our way to the trail-head and with less than 200meters to go, things got ugly.

Rick, who was a little ways ahead of me, had stopped at a corner to remove an obtrusive branch that had been spotted earlier in the day. Riding past him very slowly, I actually ran out of momentum and started to fall onto Rick and his bike. With all my weight behind it, my left arm passed by the teeth of Rick’s chain-ring, cutting open a large gash in my forearm. Realising what was happending as it happened, I was able to communicate to Rick immediately the severity of the cut. Tearing open his Camel-back, Rick got out his first-aid kit as Damon pulled up who quickly took over from me, holding the arm tight to reduce possible blood loss. A moment later, Jason pulled up, whipped out his cell phone and was talking with the good folks at 911 emergency. With my arm bandaged and raised above me, Rick helped me out of the trails where we waited just 10mins for the ambulance to arrive.

Within 2hours of arriving at Picton Memorial Hospital, I was sewn-up with 7 sutures holding things together. Fortunately, the wound was very clean and the chain-ring did not hit any tendons or arteries. Although it will keep me off the mountain bike for a week or two, I am back on the road bike, healing and waiting for more trail riding!
