Starting at the End

Friday morning I woke with one thing on my mind; Land’s End. Once there, I would begin riding North towards John O’Groats in Scotland. For most End-to-Enders, the ride is about 900miles or roughly 1450kms. I, however, will be taking a more ambling route, first through Wales, then up to and East along Hadrian’s Wall. But, first things first; get to Land’s End. Passing such signs as “the first and last Inn in England” I was getting excited about my arrival. After a brisk 25kms, I was there.

Soon after arriving, I was sure to get the obligatory photograph taken[ £10!] of myself and Irene standing next to the sign pointing to John O’Groats, New York City and my hometown, Toronto. Looking for postcards, I met Dave, a fellow cyclist who had just that day completed the south-bound End-to-End. We chatted for a good while and I was astounded to hear his story.

On a Monday evening, this avid cyclist was sitting in a pub when he over-heard three other guys chatting about how they intended on doing the ride. Within minutes, he had called and got the time off work. Three days later, he was driving North to begin the ride that Sunday! Now, I had always thought that I was leaving my schedule to the last minute, planning my route nearly as I rode it. Then I met Dave who, in less than a week, had gone from sitting in the pub, to sitting on the saddle with 900miles ahead of him. It just goes to show; when opportunity presents itself, jump at it!

Dave told me that while the hills I’d thus encountered in Cornwall were tough, riding up hill in the driving rain against 70mph winds in Northern Scotland was really tough. That both inspired and kinda scared me; “What the heck have I got myself into?” I thought. After a few more laughs and a good while admiring each others bikes, we soon parted ways. He was heading home; I had post cards to write and a ride to start…

An hour or so later, I was back on the bike, liesurely riding along the coast, reminding myself to enjoy the sunny blue skies while they lasted. John O’Groats–and many, many miles in between–here I come!
