Welcome to Telluride

Telluride, CO is the mountain home to some of Hollywood’s elite including the likes of Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey, Oliver Stone and Sigourney Weaver.  This past weekend, it was honoured enough to have its streets and trails graced by the presence of 54 bad-ass cyclists…including the likes of yours truly. With all those actors, this town was in need of come high calibre guests.

An old silver mining town–where they never actually mined the gold mineral, Telluride–it sits deep within the San Juan mountains, along the San Miguel River and the at the base of the stunning Bridal Veil Falls.  Having never visited this town, when my pals Jennifer and Tobin asked me to sweep 60 miles of the inaugural Telluride 100 mountain bike race, I eagerly said yes.

Arriving Friday afternoon, I got into town just in time to help organize the food etc for each of the five aid stations.  The next morning, I woke just in time to witness the 6am race start. Since I was not required to begin riding until noon, I spent a couple hours exploring…and drinking coffee.

While the affluence in this town is unmistakable, it is clearly a town of very fit, very active people.  Skiing, hiking, cycling are all well supported in this town.  In fact, while it seems nearly impossible to find anywhere to park a car for more than two hours, there are bike racks everywhere!!!  Good to see a town with its priorities straight.

I drank coffee and chatted with a guy starting a company that will take juvenile offenders on cycle-touring trips.  I found bicycles of all sorts just beckoning I take their picture.  A man was in the middle of the street with his canvas and easel, painting the mountain view.  There were palatial multi-million dollar homes, small ski shacks and even a tee-pee, with For Sale signs either Christie’s or Sotheby’s.

It was the sort of town I wanted to see more of, to get to know more about, to explore further.  Since my task was a bike race, I’ll have to return to Telluride one of these days and explore it further.  For now, here’s a sampling of what I saw……
