Toronto to Texas; home to home

Wow, what a summer, such a grand time. I enjoyed a hugely rewarding time spent working at Sweet Pete’s Bike Shop in Toronto; I completed both the Noble Pursuit team road race and the 100km Paul’s Dirty Enduro mtb race; there were new roads and new trails explored; I was blessed to have made many new friends and of course there were many, many miles covered. Heck, I even got a new bicycle tattoo! Yup, a pretty fine season as far as I’m concerned. But as the summer comes to a close, my eyes and my heart look south towards my west Texas home.

With farewells made, bikes packed and the Sprinter van tuned, early Tuesday morning I began the long drive south-west. From Toronto I drove to Hamilton, ON to say farewell to my dear friends Natalie and Bre. From there I crossed the border to Buffalo, NY. With the (unfounded)anxiety of a border crossing behind me, I drove through Ohio and the cities of Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Beyond Ohio lay Kentucky and the city of Louisville. In Tennessee I rolled through Nashville, Memphis and into the State of Arkansas. From Little Rock, AR I continued south-west and into the great State of Texas. A slight detour from my destination of Austin, I drove south through east Texas to visit with the most wonderful Barrett and Meridith. Friday morning, under the threat of flooding, I cruised the final 90miles to Austin. Here for the weekend, on Monday or Tuesday I’ll complete the last leg of this mammoth migration with an 8-9hr drive to Terlingua in far west Texas. Home.

After 2500kms/1500miles of driving, it will be nice to have the weekend off before the last day of driving. Although it rained for much of the drive, it was an uneventful cross-country trek that I actually enjoyed. Well, except for that truck-stop diner in Glencoe, Kentucky where everyone smoked and the food was terrible.

Working every day for a week before I departed Toronto, it has been nearly two weeks since I got on my bike for anything more than the 3km/2mile commute to work. Yes, I am in withdrawal. Hopefully the rain here in Austin won’t dampen my efforts to get out and spin the legs a little bit. Until then, I can recall fondly a wonderful summer in the City while I look forward to all the glory the desert has to offer.
