Three Days in Durango; Day 3, Engineer Mountain

Tuesday morning, day three riding in the Durango area.  I woke good and early, though just after the sun’s rising brilliance.  All was calm; the trees, the lake, the sky, my companions.  It was cool but certainly not cold; in my sleeping bag, I was warm.  Damn, gotta pee, really badly…  Okay, so now I’m up, thinking about coffee and the mountain-biking adventure to come.

The Sprinter-van door slides open, Frakes in charge of coffee; such a good man.  The five of us ate breakfast, reminisced about yesterday’s ride and quickly conceded that we’d all prefer the shorter ride option today.  Our route would start at Coal Bank Pass on the Million Dollar Highway.  Immediately we we thrust up about 1000′ from our 10,640′ launch pad.  At the base of Engineer Mountain, we sat among the wild flowers and gazed upon the mountains before us.  No, I never get tired of these views.

For the next 40 minutes or so, we descended nearly 3000′.  We zig-zagged back and back, back and forth across a mountain-side meadow, wild flowers everywhere.  With every turn, more flowers and more smiles.  We flew down that single-track trail like we’d robbed a bank.  The only thing that stopped us was a herd of cattle.

Eventually the good times came to an end as we got to the bottom of Engineer.  A short ways down the road, however, are the Cascades; bone-chilling water holes in a tight canyon.  We jumped from one the next, some as high as 15 feet.  It was cold, it was exhilarating, it was just another day in paradise with a group of truly wonderful people.  Life is good.

  1. Alex, I remember Durango with great affection. I’m glad you’re making the most of each day and loving it. Don’t look for me at the bike shop. I’ve moved on smiling. Joe
