Squamish BC, Here I come

A big decision has been made. Though, to be quite honest, it was an easy one to make. Debating my plans for the 2017 summer season I knew I needed to live in the mountains. While Colorado pulls at my heart, I really need to be back in Canada. A small mountain town in BC or Alberta with great mountain-biking would be ideal. Yesterday, the ideal became a reality.

From mid-March until mid-October, I will be living and working in Squamish, British Columbia. A town of about 15,000 at the end of Howe Sound on the Sea to Sky Highway north of Vancouver. Surrounded by the Coast Range mountains, it also boasts a huge mountain-bike scene. So far so good.

For work, I have just accepted a seasonal job with Giant Bicycles Vancouver, wrenching at their Squamish warehouse. They boast a very busy retail shop in Vancouver and will soon be opening a women’s-specific Liv store. Lots of high-end mountain and road bikes none older than four years, no direct customer interaction, flexible schedule, French-speaking colleagues, good pay and a place to park my van.  This sounds very promising.

Though I visited Vancouver briefly many years ago, I have always wanted to live out west. I have many friends in Vancouver, Victoria and elsewhere in British Columbia whom I look forward to visiting. I will also be reunited with Jill, a dear old friend who actually hired me at Sweet Pete’s. This job just keeps getting better and better. Speaking of Sweet Pete’s…

While I love all my friends, family and colleagues in Toronto and elsewhere in Ontario, my heart and soul crave a return to the mountains. My time at Sweet Pete’s has been remarkable. Never have I been so well treated by an employer and management. I enjoy many friendships that will last me a life-time while working with many wonderful people, all dedicated cyclists. Sweet Pete’s customers and the greater Toronto cycling community have been a genuine pleasure to serve. I will miss being a part of the Sweet Pete’s family but will always consider “1204” my home. That means more to me than you can ever know.
