One Day, Two Rides, Endless Lilacs

Just another day in paradise.  Woke this morning at 5:30am to join Kt for the drive to the laundromat in town.  With clothes washing by 6:30am, we went in search of coffee.  Alas, both places in Picton where one can normally get a good cup of coffee were closed this holiday Monday until 9am.  We did eventually find coffee at the Inn where Kt had to drop two rental bikes.  Caffeinated and laundered, we drove to the Macauley Mountain parking-lot trail-head with Ali arriving just minutes later.  By 9am we three were on the trails.

For the next two hours, we zipped around all of Macauley’s tight corners; we flew up those steep climbs and negotiated all those tough, off-camber, leaf covered with the greatest of ease.  The trails were ours, not another soul in sight.  We laughed and hooted and brush through the lush blooming lilac bushes, covering ourselves in that lovely scent.  It was such a blast to be out riding with these two dear friends, it was like being back in Texas!  The only detraction from this otherwise perfect ride was the pile of garbage some thug had dumped a short hop from the road.

With the bikes back in the vehicles but the smiles still painted across our faces, we went for coffee and breakfast.  By noon we were back at the bike shop, which gave me about two hours until today’s next ride.

At the end of yesterday’s 130km ride, Peter, Dr Dave and I agreed that nice light ride today would be perfect recovery from yesterday’s slog into the wind.  At 2pm, Dave rolled-up and for the second time today, I threw a leg over the saddle.  Although, this afternoon’s ride would be upon ma chere Sophie.

“Just a little noodle, huh?”  Dave snidely commented as we tore along the roads of Prince Edward County.  Although the intention was to spin a light easy 60kms, the three of us were feeling great and riding well together.  Not to mention, the weather was stellar;  mid-twenties with very little wind and big blue skies.  We just felt great, none of us inclined to lower the pace.  And you know, sometimes that’s just ok.  You’ve really got to take advantage of moments when they appear and enjoy each as it comes.  Today’s moments had us flying along, pedalling smoothly and riding strong.  It was wonderful, the sweat pouring into my eyes, my legs burning just a bit, my heart pumping, my smile ever-broadening.

With 65kms under our bib-shorts, we arrived at Dave’s home where he treated us to ice-water and lemon San Pellegrino.  After a lovely chat about colon cancer, Peter and I leisurely rode the final 10kms to home.

Two rides, two bikes, two groups of friends, one very, very happy Alex.
