NYE Trip Itinerary

It’s been a while. Without adding judgement, it’s been far too long. In fact, I can’t remember the last time; a year ago perhaps? In either case, I plan on spending this New Years Eve like I did the last one: a solo multi-day bike-packing trip throughout the Chihuahuan Desert of far west Texas.

This year I will revisit some of the trails and roads I explored last year while adding many more I’ve only dreamed of. Last year was a three day/two night trip. This year, five days/four nights. If all goes well I’ll stick to the following itinerary:

Day 1, Thursday December 28th: Accompanied by a few dear friends, I plan on rolling out of Desert Sports at 9am to begin this grand adventure. After coffee with Yuhas, we’ll ride the Lajitas Trails to the Barton Warnock Visitor Center at the Big Bend Ranch State Park. After checking-in, I’ll ride the bulk of the first half of the 60mile Epic Loop. Where Pila Montoya hits the Main Park Road, I’ll head north-east to the Los Alamos Residence. There, I’ll refill my water and find a deserted spot to make camp. I figure this will be the most demanding day with the most amount of trail riding.

Day 2, Friday December 29th: Again refilling my water at Los Alamos, I’ll heave my bike over the Park gate to begin riding northwest on Bandera Mesa Road. I took this same road last year, however, instead of eventually turning southwest on Casa Piedra Road, I’ll join it and head north. Where the dirt hits the pavement I’ve been put in touch with a family who have offered me water. From there, on and on along that road till it hits highway 67. From there, turn north, pass through the Border Patrol check-point,(got my passport packed) finishing in Marfa. I will spend the night with my friend Joey and his family. This looks to be the longest day mileage-wise, at about 70-75miles.

Day 3, Saturday December 30th: Resupplying food in Marfa, I’ll ride south-west along Pinto Canyon Road, a piece of road I’ve long wanted to ride. Thirty miles of pavement, thirty miles of dirt will get me to the tiny border town of Ruidosa. There, I will get water from Charlie’s place and will try to make camp on the grounds of the abandoned Sacred Heart Church.

Day 4, Sunday December 31st: From Ruidosa I’ll ride to Presidio where I’ll replenish my food. From there, back into the State Park, past the Sauceda Ranger Station and into the Solitario. That night will be spent at the Solitario Bar. Although, to be quite honest. I bet I’ll be asleep well before my hosts, certainly long before midnight.

Day 5, Monday January 1st: With water refilled in the Solitario, I’ll ride east out the Lefthand Shutup. Then it’s just Blue Ridge Road(dirt) to Salt Grass Draw then over Sawmill and back into the Terlingua Ghosttown. I figure this, the final day, will be the shortest.

All in all, I figure the trip will cover about 270miles. For now, however, I need to eat lots of food, drink lots of water and go through all my gear again to make sure I’ve not forgotten anything…and to pack more food. There can never be too much food.

Wanting to do something special to usher in the New Year, I figure a five day cycling adventure will do the trick. How will you spend yours?
