Northern Ireland; Mixed Feelings on this Rocky Land

Last Wednesday, July 13th, was my last day in Northern Ireland. Since then I’ve had plenty of time to consider the time I spent there. Though I recognize it’s naive to think one can really get much of a firm appreciation for a place and a people after just ten days, I did come away with some distinct impressions.

My first impression concerns the land itself. The countryside looks as though millions of years ago a giant emerald felt was carefully placed over this jagged rock that pokes out of the sea. In some places, mountains have slowly torn holes in the felt, exposing the dark stone below. In places along the coast, the wind has slowly pushed back the felt exposing white cliffs and sandy beaches. Whether the skies were sunny or cloudy, the beauty of Ireland is ever-present. This being the case, I was surprised to see so very few cyclists.

Essential to a land being a country, are the people who call it home. As mentioned in previous postings, Ireland does still suffer from it’s tumultuous past. Although I am quite willing to acknowledge that England has caused much misery for the Irish over the centuries, there does seem to be a bitterness that lingers. While most people do desire a lasting peace in Ireland, there are still elements of thuggery that refuse to look beyond selfish emotion or short-term gain. In some cases there is even a sense of pride in the violence that has–and sometimes still does– defined this beautiful Country. It was such that I, like the people who call Ireland home, was unable to feel fully at ease.

So, as I sailed across the Northern Chanel, I said farewell to Northern Ireland, happy to have spent time there, but looked forward to returning to Scotland.
