Last Road Ride, New Top Speed

As I get ready for the migration back to Toronto, this week is one of “lasts.” Last shift with the medics, last dinner with friends, last coffee at the Posada Milagro, last beer at the Boathouse. On that list are, of course, the requisite last bike rides. To that end, Wednesday was a final road ride into the Big Bend National Park.

Shortly after 9am, Reilly, Mark, Manu and I set out to ride the 68miles from the Cottonwood Store to Castolon and back. The weather was ideal, sorta. Sunny and warm as we rolled out, it would reach over 90degF/32degC by early afternoon. The winds, however, blew strong all day. Descending from the summit of Sotol Vista, I was getting pushed all over the road, having to work really hard to stay upright.  Kinda nerve-racking actually.

Arriving at Castolon, we stopped for a quick snack and a beer. That one beer became two before we swung a leg over the saddle for the ride home. Climbing that long hill, those winds became punishing head- and cross-headwinds. It was a struggle, but well worth it. Arriving back at Sotol Vista, Manu’s lovely wife, Kerry, met us with water, food and yes, beer.  Fully satiated, we knew we had a killer tail-wind waiting for us down the other side of Sotol Vista.

Prior to this ride, my maximum speed record was 57mph/92kph.  On this descent, with a screaming tailwind on open roads, Manu’s computer told him he topped-out at 58.7mph/94kph…which is when I passed him. So, we figure I hit 60mph/96kph. New personal record! (yes, my goal is to break 100kph/62mph)

Back at Manu’s house, we cooled off under the water hose, had one final beer and congratulated each other on an excellent day of riding. Personally, the ride left me with a wonderful memory of my final days here in West Texas. Leaving town early Sunday morning, my last mountain bike ride will be on Friday…
