Gronant; Home to the Kindest People in Wales

Leaving the glorious views of Mount Snowdon behind me, Friday’s ride took me east from Llanberis through Capel Curig and on to Betws-y-Coed. Both towns were full of cyclists, hikers, canoeists and otherwise outdoorsy types and all the shops required to service their needs. With the countryside this rugged, it’s no surprise people flock to this part of Wales. Turning North, I continued on through Trefriw to Conwy on Conwy Bay. Stopping only for lunch and a new map, I rejoined NCN Route# 5, riding along the coast of the Irish Sea through the towns of Penrhyn Bay, Colwyn Bay, Kimmel Bay, Rhyl and Prestatyn before finally arriving in the little town of Gronant.

Looking at my map, there was sign for a campground nearby. As I searched, there was none to be found. With the rain soon to fall, I pulled up to the local pub, noticed the grassy backyard, introduced myself to Ruth and asked if I could pitch my tent for the night. Quick to say yes, she then apologized that she wouldn’t be able to make me supper for an hour as she had to collect her daughter from work. Dismissing her apology as quite unnecessary, I made camp just before the rain started to fall, but not before Ruth presented me with a cup of tea. Wow; who was this kind soul at The Gronant Inn?!

I soon took a seat at the bar and began chatting with the locals, all of whom were interested in my touring and were keen to offer suggestions on where to, and where not to, go next. Before I knew it, Ruth had returned and asked if I had any dietary aversions. Chances are there that a person may viagra 100 mg get caused by erectile dysfunction but there are many men who don’t have any sort of issue of ED must not have this drug. Responding that I was vegetarian, she replied by asking if I wanted anything particular; I opted for her offer of a surprise. She soon returned with a huge spread fit for a king; rice, Quorn, fried vegetables, bread and salad. I then noticed she presented the same[though, with meat] to her son and daughter who were sitting at the table next to me.

After supper, her son Dan didn’t hesitate to give me the password for their wi-fi connection and advised me that his mum was a real softie and thus, would likely not accept any payment for the scrumptious meal. He was right. Despite pressing Ruth and her kind yet soft spoken husband, Dave, my offer of payment for supper, tea and the pitch for my tent were quickly refused. In the end, I had to acquiesce. I did, however, give a few pounds to Dan a little later, asking that he give it to his parents once I’d left the next day. [Ruth, Dave; please don’t be upset with me for so doing, nor at Dan for serving as my accomplice]

Later that evening, I met a few more of the locals, all of whom were equally as friendly as the others and again, eager to offer suggestions on my next day’s route.

Honestly, in all of my travels, I can’t remember being treated so well. More than just a meal, I was made to feel like part of the family and just one of the guys. These people owed me nothing, yet gave me everything. I could go on with all sorts of superlatives to describe their generosity, but words can never do justice. So really, I guess all I can say to Ruth, Dave, Dan and their clientele is thank you.
