Desert Lessons 3, 4 & 5

Having spent a full month playing and mountain biking here in the s/w Texas desert, I’ve discovered a few tips to make such adventures more enjoyable and less painful. First, it is essential to understand that everything in the desert is both very fragile and fraught with danger. If you ride off the trail, your track will remain for months, possibly years; a permanent blight on this otherwise stunning landscape. Equally, if you go off the trail, every living thing is prepared to protect themselves by drawing blood. But, if you somehow avoid all the medieval torture cacti, the ground is nothing but rock, stone and sand of varying sizes, but equal in their ability to brake bones.

The second rule is more of a requirement as life down here is tough, damn tough. So, too, is the cycling. If you are inclined to come down with your trusty mtb for a few days riding, be VERY sure you are in VERY good shape and are a VERY competent cyclist. Oh ya; sympathy for stupidity is in VERY short supply down here.

If you are still interested in riding down here, then please consider this third lesson; your bike is going to take a beating. 29’ers rule down here but are second in command to slimmed tubes, which are essential. In fact, be prepared to get a flat on each ride, maybe two. You will also shred a pair of tires every couple of months from riding on all that rock and stone.

With these lessons well learned and well applied, you can have an incredible time riding in the desert. If you ignore these tips, however, then be warned; the desert takes no prisoners.
