Cottonwood Pass at 92.5kph

Wednesday afternoon I packed Sophie in the car and drove the 25miles north to Buena Vista.  There, I parked, threw on my nice white cycling shoes, reinstalled Sophie’s front wheel and headed west, straight into the wind.

For nearly two hours, I turned those cranks against the blowing wind as I climbed over 4000feet to the Cottonwood Pass.  The road casually meandered it’s way west for about 25kms before the switchbacks began.  Back and forth, around and around, up and up they went until I was finally pitched up the hill to the summit at 12,126feet.  The climb was a bit of a tough one with all that wind, but the views looking west were worth every drop of sweat.  Oh, and so was the descent!

The signs before each switchbacks read15mph but I was taking them at 25mph, diving on the brakes as I approached each treed corner, accelerating back out towards the next juicy turn.  There were even a few cars that got passed by yours truly as I eventually reached my personal top-speed record of 92.5kph (57.5mph)  It was exhilarating!  Though it took just under 2hrs to climb that hill, it took less than 40mins to arrive back at the car.  Wow, what a ride!!
