Bike-packing Trial Run; here we go

With the fierce winds that have gripped the Big Bend the past few days finally started to abate, I’ll be heading  out around 10am this morning for a two-day/one-night bike-packing trip into the Big Bend Ranch State Park.  Reilly and I will ride from the Terlingua Ghost Town along Reed’s, through the Lajitas trails then into the Park at the East Contrabondo Trail-head.  Following those 14 miles, we’ll ride another 25 miles or so to Pila Montoya where we’ll camp for the night.  Tomorrow morning, we’ll ride to the Sauceda Ranger Station then complete the Epic Loop back to the Contrabondo Trail-head, returning to Terlingua via Lajitas/Reed’s.

We can get water from a spring-fed tank up at Pila Montoya, as well as the Ranger Station if need be.  For this trip, rather than bringing cooking equipment and food to be cooked, we’ve each packed ready-to-eat food for both days of riding plus tonight’s dinner and tomorrow’s breakfast.  Alas, no coffee to be had on the trail.

On my bike I’ve got a handle-bar bag containing my sleeping-bag, sleeping-pad and bivy-sac.  In the full-size frame-bag are three spare Slime-filled tubes, a water filter, spare parts, tools, pump, food for camp and toiletries.  In the little gas-tank bag is my camera, lip-balm and a bit of food for while riding.  Under the saddle in the large seat-bag are my camp clothes, long-sleeve wind shell and down jacket. [I don’t yet have camp shoes]  Lastly, in my hydration back-pack, apart from the 3L of water, I’ve got toilet-paper, first-aid, wallet, head-lamp, knife, wooden spoon and plenty of food to eat while riding both days.  Underneath the down-tube I’ve got one water-bottle with Perpetuem-infused water.

I’m pretty satisfied with how it all came together, but the real test will come in a few hours time.  There’s even space left in my back-pack and seat-bag to accommodate cooking gear and more food for longer trips.  I’m really excited about this two-day bike-packing trial run, as it represents the next chapter in my cycling adventures, one that combines the excitement of mountain-biking with the adventure of cycle-touring.  Wish me luck, see ya Thursday evening!
