2016 Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest; sharing in discovery

Bike Fest, a time like no other. For three days, friends old and new play in the desert on bicycles. The 2016 edition of the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest was one to be particularly proud of. Organizers, volunteers, riders, vendors, support staff and many more all conspired to show-off the incredible trails of Big Bend.

The weather was stellar; sunny, warm with barely a breeze; west Texas winter at its finest. The trails were in prime condition, further burned-in by more than five hundred happy cyclists. Last month’s addition of the bridge on Dog Cholla caused all to rejoice, as did the recent trail-work on the back section of the Epic. While a few felt limp from the 85+F/29+C mid-day heat, none were deterred by the chilly morning starts.

Santa Cruz, Scott, Specialized, and Niner brought their demo fleets for all to enjoy; Shimano, Richardson Bike Mart and Bicycle Sport Shop provided much appreciated neutral support. There was copious amounts of free beer provided by Lone Star, Big Bend Brewing Co, Celebration Liquor and of course the most diabolical, Team $uper Awesome furnishing Austin Beer Works’ finest ales. There may even have been a shot-ski, but I’m not going to talk about that. Heaps of schwag was handed out during the raffle, the fair Kathy Wisdom the big winner.  Certainly the Big Bend Trails Alliance well supported by the wallets of Bike Fest attendees. Injuries and incidents were few and of little consequence while hundreds of miles were ridden in the Big Bend National Park, the Big Bend Ranch State Park and the Lajitas Golf Resort trails. Despite the keen efforts of Desert Sports staff and co-conspirators to party themselves into oblivion, their ride leaders showed off the best Big Bend has to offer a pair of visiting knobby tires.

This annual reunion of cyclists from around Texas and all over the country really is what cycling’s all about. Old friends laugh about their day on the saddle while reminiscing about last years’ two wheeled exploits. Friends of friends instantly became our own, a passion for the bike bonding us like kin. Every year we get to know each other better and better as we continue to discover these desert trails together.

And you know what? When you can do that, when you get to share discovery with a friend, you know you’ve found something special. That’s the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest.

See you next year dear friends…
